Cobh – A Famous History

Cobh has a really fascinating and intriguing history. From here, hundreds and thousands of mostly penniless and hungry Irish men and women left Ireland’s shores to build a new life, especially around the Famine years of 1844-1848. Many thrived and prospered but many died during the journey because of the terrible travelling conditions of the time.

Lusitania Monument In Cobh

In the town centre, you’ll find a memorial to the victims of the Lusitania, many of whom are buried in Cobh’s old church cemetery.

The Lusitania was sunk off Kinsale in the year 1915 by a German submarine and as a direct consequence of this, the United States of America entered The Great War (World War 1).

Many of the survivors of that sinking were brought back here and the ship’s sinking is remembered with this beautiful monument.

Cobh And The Titanic

Perhaps Cobh’s most famous maritime association is with The Titanic, dubbed at the time “the safest liner in the world”.

Queenstown (or Cobh as it is called today) was the last port of call on her maiden voyage which, of course, was also her last.

“The Queenstown Story” is a vistor attraction centre based in a very charming Victorian building which at one time used to be the railway station of the area. This multimedia attraction tells the story of Queenstown tells the story of the area from the mass emigration of the Famine years (c.1845) up to the era of the great liners in the 1950’s.

Cobh – A Sightseeing Delight

Cobh is a charming maritime town with a famous history and brightly coloured houses that define the steep slope that climbs to it’s crowning glory, Cobh Cathedral, famous for it’s 47 bells.

It is situated on one of the three islands that comprise Cork Harbour, an island called Great Island. Little Island and Fota Island are the other islands of Cork Harbour, barely noticeable as islands as they are all joined by roads and bridges.
